I sat down expecting this to be a very predictable, formulaic movie with little to be said for it, other than its Pollyanna aspects. I was, instead, pleasantly surprised.
Much of the acting was excellent and the plot, while obviously amped up with deviations from the actual true-life saga, was for the most part not the nauseatingly pat rendition I was expecting.
It was Disney-esque, which is not entirely bad. If you are like me, some light, mindless faire can provide a much needed uplifting of spirit every now and then.
But, because there were some wrinkles in the predictability, fine acting on the part of Sandra Bullock (someone I’m not usually a fan of), Jae Head and, of course, Kathy Bates, along with some below surface level character studies, the movie pulled me into the setting and the drama. I was able to identify with this struggling family and pull for them at every turn.
What it ended up being for me was a three hankie movie with countless teardrops for my wife. As a movie-art-form, I’d give it about three stars, but as a life-form, inspirational classic, I’d give it a thumbs up, way up, for quality family entertainment.
Terri cried throughout much of the movie and concluded, “This is the sort of movie that is perfect for families. You can take the entire family and not have to explain away, or shield your kids’ eyes from any of it. I wish there were more movies like this.”
She found it uplifting and inspiring. She thought the acting was good, as well, and that the script wasn’t too syrupy to be entertaining....Thumbs Way Up! from Terri.
