Dan's Hobbies

Aviation. . . .

. . .Here is a picture of Dan, flying one of his favorite aiplanes, the Piper Arrow, in one of his favorite places--The Hanalei area of Kauai, Hawaii. Beneath the plane are taro plants, which are a staple in Hawaii and used to make poi. There are two varieties of taro. What you see here is wetland taro. The other is called upland taro and grows near Waimea.

. . In the background are mountains in which, depending on the time of year, you would be apt to see lots of tiny rivulets, which would be waterfalls. This is the wet side of the wetest spot on earth.

. . Can you see Dan's beard, as he flies the plane? What about his green Hawaiian Reynes Spooner Aloha shirt?

. . Here he is (to the left) in his absolute favorite, the Lake Amphibian. The gear is retractable and so it functions both as a boat and an airplane.

. . Right here, it is up on "the step," preparing for take off. In order to fly it must separate from the natural suction provided by its bond with the water.

. . . Courtesy of the G.I. Bill (as a result of his stint in the U.S. Air Force, as a missile launch officer, Dan was able to to obtain the following aviation ratings: Commercial Pilot, Instrument Rating, Sea Plane Rating, Multi-Engine Rating. He was working toward the objective of becoming a flight instructor when the funds ran out.
Dan is instrument rated, which means he is authorized to fly (on instruments) in poor visibility.
. . . Dan's Lake Amphibian (one such as he flies, not one that he owns) is shown here, tied up at Frank's Tract, which is in the American River Delta. The plane is capable of taxiing on the beach. This is great for camping or picnics.
Dan also has a multi-engine rating. This is a Beechcraft Twin, such as Dan has flown.
